A familiar face at the state capitol Thursday, advocating for what was among his top priorities.

Former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura testified before a Senate Committee considering legalizing recreational marijuana in the state.

Ventura admitted he and his wife Terri had illegal cannabis shipped to them when she began having seizures about 10 years ago, several years after he left office.

He says it was because traditional medical treatment did nothing to help:

"They put her on four different seizure medicines, (they) did not work, all had bad side effects," said Ventura. "In desperation, we broke the law. My friends had to send it to me, in Minnesota."

But it was an act that made the difference for the state's former First Lady.

"My wife took the first three drops under the tongue, and has not had a seizure since. None," Ventura said. "Marijuana cannabis stopped the seizures. Not our medicine."

Ventura has been a strong proponent of legal, adult-use recreational marijuana in the state.

He told the panel that he was the one who started this conversation years ago.
