Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has issued an executive order that activates the Minnesota National Guard during the March trial of a former Minneapolis police officer charged in George Floyd's death.
It's the latest step as the state prepares for potential unrest during the trial of Derek Chauvin. Plans are also in place for state and dozens of local law enforcement agencies to be on had to keep the peace.
This week, Governor Walz proposed a $35 million state fund that would be used to help reimburse agencies that send officers to the trial. Senate Republicans have pushed back, saying the city of Minneapolis, not the state, should cover that bill.
Chauvin, who held his knee to Floyd's neck before he died, is charged with second degree unintentional murder and second degree manslaughter.
