Minnesota Governor Tim Walz weighed in on the mayhem that took place in Minneapolis on the Fourth of July when some took to the streets to use fireworks as projectiles.
Walz joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Vineeta Sawkar on the Morning News, sharing that it’s disappointing, especially after the city had great success with bigger crowds just last month.
“It’s reckless and dangerous with a few folks doing this. And this comes on the heels of watching Minneapolis put on the Taylor Swift concerts, the pride parade, the Taste of Minnesota,” Walz said. “We saw over a million people… and then we get this idiotic behavior. It’s dangerous.”
Sixteen people were arrested, several of whom were juveniles, as a result of the chaos across the city on Tuesday. But while juveniles were involved, Walz says youth isn’t an excuse.
“It goes beyond kids being kids. Blatant disregard in shooting fireworks at people, especially the police, that’s just unacceptable,” Walz said.
Walz says more needs to be done in the community to address the situation.
The Minnesota State Patrol was working with the Minneapolis Police Department to help with large crowds on the 4th. Walz spoke about the partnership between law enforcement agencies, saying it’s essential for public safety.
“It just makes everything work better,” Walz said.
