School and city leaders celebrated the start of an expansion at North High School on Friday, as Minneapolis Public Schools broke ground on its new Career and Technical Education Center.

Interim Superintendent Rochelle Cox said students will learn engineering, robotics, and computers at the new facility, which will be built alongside renovations to North High School next door.

"I think it's really going to offer an opportunity to our students that will be premier across the metro area," said Cox at the groundbreaking.

"We have to make sure our families are part of this process," said School Board Director Sharon El-Amin of District 2.

Mayor Jacob Frey said a project of this magnitude shows huge promise.

"We are betting on ourselves," he said. "We're betting on the students in the Minneapolis Public Schools system and we're betting that their futures will be bright and extraordinary."

The new CTE could open next fall.
