Some of us spoil our dogs -- ahem, fur children -- every day. But August 26th is one day to really let loose: It's National Dog Day!
National Dog Day was established in 2004 to acknowledge family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. It was also established to bring attention to the plight of animals around the globe and encourage adoption.
"Today is a day to celebrate your amazing dogs for their unconditional love and undying loyalty, as well as bring awareness to the overpopulation of wonderful dogs in shelters all over the world, looking for a second chance," the National Dog Day account posted on Twitter.
The day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. But we wondered, which breeds are the most popular? That depends on who you ask, though there are some clear favorites.
According to the American Kennel Club, the Labrador Retriever is the country's most popular dog.
The Labrador Retriever is so beloved, it has topped the AKC's annual top dog list for the last 31 years. The club ranks the most popular breeds based on registration statistics for the previous year.

According to Rover, a website for pet sitters and dog walkers, the most popular dog in America isn't a purebred at all.
The website ranked dog breeds across the US by analyzing its database of over a million pets, and determined that mixed breed dogs are actually the most popular.
While Rover's list includes some of the AKC's top dogs, it introduces a few other beloved breeds including goldendoodles, yorkies and pit bulls.
