North Shore pre-Christmas snowstorm a boon for ski resorts

Two feet of new snow this week and low temperatures next week mean there's plenty of room to ski

While driving around the metro area is made more difficult by this week’s lingering winter storm, the conditions far up on the North Shore—almost as far northeast in the state as you can go—are perfect for one business in particular.

Jim Vick, general manager at Lutsen Mountains, said the ski resort saw more than two feet of snow from this week’s storm, raising its seasonal base to 64 inches. He said the two full days of snowfall make it possible to open up more runs for skiiers and snowboarders.

Vick was a guest with Adam Carter and Jordana Green on WCCO Radio on Thursday.

“In particular, we have a number of tree-skiing runs that are gladed runs between those that we make snow and groom, and those require natural snow,” said Vick. “All of those should pretty much come online after this storm.”

Vick also said the forecasted single-digit and sub-zero lows in the week leading up to Christmas are a perfect opportunity for the resort to add to its base already on the mountain.

“The colder and drier it gets, the lighter that snow falls.
I saw some lows close to zero coming up after this storm passes,” he said. “That is ideal for making snow.”

As for getting to and from, Vick said there’s really only one highway—U.S. 61—to worry about, and it gets cleared pretty easily.
