Richard Neer played soccer and baseball at Adelphi University in Garden City while getting his start in radio at the campus station. He went on to create WLIR-FM as a rock station with his longtime friend, Michael Harrison. They both graduated to the seminal progressive rock station in the nation, WNEW-FM, where Neer worked for almost 30 years. He did the morning show for three separate stints and was program director for five years.
Richard and Rick Cerrone began The Sports Connection on WNEW-AM in 1987, which pioneered some of the concepts driving sports talk today. He joined the staff of WFAN in 1988 and has worked every daypart on the station, most consistently Saturday from 6-10 a.m. and Sunday mornings during baseball season, in addition to late nights when the game schedule allows.
He is an associate editor for Talkers magazine, the bible of the talk radio industry. He wrote “FM: The Rise and Fall of Rock Radio,” (Villard 2001) with a foreword by Steve Van Zandt, which is considered the definitive history of the progressive phenomenon.
Neer's first novel, “Something of the Night,” was published as an eBook in August 2014 — a thriller set on the Jersey shore involving a private investigator tasked with finding a missing author, whose manuscript threatens to destroy a prominent Catholic school that boasts a championship basketball program. The plot’s many twists ratchet up the suspense as our protagonist and his sports-talk friend uncover a far larger scandal.
He and wife Vicky, a television producer, live with two willfully disobedient golden retrievers, Brady and Duncan.
