Boomer Esiason has high praise for Saquon Barkley: 'I was really happy for him'

It was a “no-brainer of a call” to go for two at the end of Sunday’s game, according to Boomer Esiason, but it was all about Saquon Barkley all the way, so it was only fitting to Boomer & Gio that he was the one who made the play.

“(Brian Daboll) new he was on the road and had the team on the ropes and had the chance to win the game, and unlike Brian Kelly at LSU against Florida State, he decided that he had the play, let’s execute it,” Boomer said on Monday’s show. “Saquon did an excellent job executing it.”

Another great play in a great game for Saquon.

“Listen, the Giants offensive line did a hell of a job, and once Saquon got to the second level, he made moves, and lowered his shoulder a few times,” Boomer said, “and he played a really physical football game, so I was happy for him.”

Gio said you kind of have to be after everything he said and did this offseason – but beyond the explosive, big moments, one smaller one stood out to Gio in thinking that Barkley is truly back.

“I thought there was one significant play other than the two big runs he had, and it was only like a four-yard pickup,” Gio said. “It was a little swing pass out to the left, he probably wasn’t the first option, but it was him on a cornerback at that point, and Jones dumped it off. The Saquon of old might have taken a couple steps, tried to dance, and maybe go out of bounds – but he went straight at the guy, put his head down, and started churning his legs, which is something we haven’t seen from him in a very long time.”

Saquon looked like he was in the best shape he’s been in for quite a while, and as Boomer knows, sometimes, that’s the difference early in the season.

“A lot of these players haven’t played four quarters of football, so the teams that usually win these games are the teams that are in the best shape,” Boomer said. “It’s Week 1, and we’ll have a lot of opinions about things, but he looked great.”
