The first days of training camp have given Giants head coach Brian Daboll his first extended look at Kadarius Toney on the field, and so far, so good.
“Being around him, he's a smart football player. He picks up things well in the meeting room. You can tell he has instincts even with him out on the field. The questions that he asks and the things that he sees,” Daboll said. “And, it was good to see him out there with his teammates. I thought he looked good. Now we got to try to string two together now.”
Daboll admitted that Buffalo evaluated Toney prior to the 2021 Draft, and that may have been a direction the Bills went in had Toney been available wen
“Obviously, we thought he was a good player with quickness and speed and ability to do different things – run different routes,” Daboll said.
Toney was a bit of a disappointment as a rookie, and ended up having a minor knee procedure that kept him on the sidelines for OTAs and minicamp. But, he’s already impressed his coach and his teammates, thanks to this highlight-reel catch on Day 1:
“It’s practice, and there’s going to be a lot of different things we ask a lot of different players to do, so I don't get overhyped with one play or mad about another play. That's what practice is for,” Daboll said, “but right there in the moment – that's important to come together as a team too and show emotion for one another. Player-to-player, coach-to-player, coach-to-coach, that's part of the team building process.”
Pro Football Focus has named Toney their “Secret Superstar” for the Giants for 2022, and he’s already potentially showing why.
