According to Daniel Jones, the first day of Giants training camp was “clean” and “pretty good overall,” A good start to the official beginning of the Brian Daboll era in New York.
This is year four and system three for Jones, but he’s loving what he’s experienced so far in a new offense constructed by Daboll and new offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.
“I think it gives the quarterback a lot of freedom to take advantage of certain looks, make checks and get the ball to certain guys, and it keeps the QB moving in the run game and the pass game,” Jones said. “So I think it’s just a very versatile offense that puts guys in a lot of different spots, disguises things and reveals defenses, which is helpful for the quarterback.”
Jones’ neck is no longer a factor, but even as concerns over him being injury-prone continue to loom, he’s trying to be smarter
“I’m making sure I’m smart in knowing when to try to get the extra yard and when to get down,” Jones said. “Other than that, my body has held up well, besides some of those decisions I can be smarter with. I’ll try to look at that and prevent those situations.”
He also knows this is a cliché “make-or-break” year for him, as he is not only in a new offense, but in the final guaranteed year of his rookie contract – but he’s not worried about the future, at least the future past January.
“I think my approach is the same: come in and make sure I’m prepared as well as I can be, then trust that and go play,” Jones said. “I think a lot of people will tell you that I’ve always tried to enjoy playing football and love to compete. We get a chance to do that every day, and all I can focus on is learning this offense, preparing as well as I can, and winning games. That’s my mindset, and I think if I do those things, the rest will take care of itself.”
And, Jones has a message for Giants fans on why they should be optimistic that this season won’t be the same old, same old for Big Blue.
“I think we’re in a spot where we’ve got a good group coming back and some new pieces coming in, and it’s a hungry team that wants to work hard and win,” Jones said. “I think we’ve learned a lot, we’re more experienced, and we’re excited for the opportunity to get out there and prove it. We’re confident we can play at a high level.”
