Julian Love was preparing with his special teams counterparts on the Giants sideline while Daniel Jones and company was marching towards a late touchdown against the Giants on Sunday, when secondary mate Xavier McKinney came over with a message.
“I’m a part of special teams…so I was talking to some of the teams guys trying to figure out what are next steps are,” Love told Tiki and Tierney. “Xavier McKinney comes running over to me and says if we get it, we’re gonna go for two. I’m like ‘OK, alright.’”
Love supported the decision, and it paid off with a nifty shovel pass to Saquon Barkley, who dove into the end zone to put the Giants ahead and cap off a monster day for Barkley.
“This was the right call because of where our offense was at that point in the game. They were hot,” Love said. “They were riding momentum…going for two I think was the right call, but yeah, he asked for some input from the defensive guys.”
For Love, it was also a reflection of Brian Daboll’s coaching style, which has been a refreshing change from years past.
“He kind of lets the players make a lot of choices,” Love said. “He’s getting our input in a lot of things, and that’s something that hasn’t been here the last couple years. That’s the biggest change for sure.
“It’s a coworker type of relationship at this level…that’s how it should go. It makes you feel like we’re working together as one to get this ship in the right direction.”
