Social media was quite unhappy with the lack of a pass interference call on the failed two-point attempt at the end of the Giants’ loss to the Buccaneers on Monday Night Football, but no one was more upset in the moment than Big Blue’s head coach.
As the game was wrapping up, Joe Judge could be seen yelling profanities at the officials about the call, which saw the officiating crew pick up a flag and decline to call pass interference on Tampa Bay’s Antoine Winfield Jr. – a pickup that cost the Giants a second chance at the two-point attempt, and ultimately the game in a 25-23 heartbreaker.
Suffice to say, Judge was still seething when it came time for his postgame press conference, but had to be judicious about his words.
“Nate (Field Judge Nathan Jones) made the right call when they threw the flag, so I don’t know why it got picked up,” Judge said. “I know they can’t use the JumboTron to make calls, but we all saw it. Nate made the right call the first time. But that’s all I’ll say about the officiating.”
As for victorious Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Tom Brady?
“The ball hit Antoine in the back, so to me it was a good call,” Arians said in his postgame presser. “I don’t know why it took so long (to review). He had his hands out and the ball hit him in the back.”
“I think (Winfield) sensed the ball was coming, so he put his arm out and hit the ball, and it saved the game for us,” Brady added. “Great play, great job after they converted that big fourth-and-16.”
Regardless of your thoughts, the score is final, and the Bucs are 6-2 and in first place in the NFC South, while the Giants are 1-7 and just a game behind their MetLife roommates in the race for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
