The Giants seem to have a thing for tight ends scoring touchdowns on their first catches of the season and/or career – and Lawrence Cager added to the former on Sunday.
Cager, elevated from the practice squad to cover for the absence of the injured Daniel Bellinger, took a little swing pass off a play-action bootleg from Daniel Jones and turned it into a nine-yard touchdown catch on Big Blue’s first drive against the Texans on Sunday:
Sunday was Cager’s third game of the season – he played Week 2 with the Jets and was called up from the Giants’ practice squad two weeks ago in Seattle – and he saw just one target in each game. He also played two games with the Jets in 2020, seeing six targets and catching four balls for 35 yards.
Already this season, the Giants saw Bellinger’s first career catch go for a TD, and last November, Chris Myarick’s first career grab was the only touchdown in Big Blue’s 13-7 win over Philly.
