Denzel Mims believes he showed in the preseason who he can be for the Jets, but as he told reporters on Wednesday, he also believes that the team has already decided on their starting receiver group to begin the season.
“I feel like I pretty much did that,” Mims said. “They're pretty set on who they want. I’m on a 53-man roster so I feel like that’s kind of a blessing on the side, but I’m gonna try to continue to do what I can to be No. 1.”

Mims’ desire to be a top receiver led to his trade request via his agent Ron Slavin on Twitter before the team’s preseason finale. In that finale against the Giants, Mims hauled in seven catches for 102 yards in a potential showcase for other teams in need of a receiver, but according to Joe Douglas, nothing of worth has come in yet.
“Ron and I have a good relationship. Kind of got a heads up that that was coming,” Douglas said of the trade request. “Fielded some calls, ultimately nothing materialized, especially anything we would consider the right value for Denzel’s talent and ability.”
That means, for the time being, Mims will be relegated to his depth role at receiver with the potential to contribute to special teams, and wait for a trade.
“Of course I’m gonna be frustrated that I’m not one of the starters,” Mims said. “But I just gotta continue to work.”
