The New York Jets got another injury scare at quarterback on Sunday, as Mike White was helped off the field in the third quarter against Cincinnati after hitting his head into the back of offensive lineman. However, White cleared injury and concussion protocol and returned to the game on the next drive.

With 7:34 left in the third and the Jets facing a second-and-seven at the Cincinnati 40, White was pressured on an incomplete pass; and as the play ended, he was hit from behind by Cam Sample, and that push sent White’s head into Chuma Edoga.

Sample was called for roughing the passer, but White was down on the turf for quite a bit before running off under his own power. Due to the nature of the hit, White remained out of the game to go through possible concussion protocol and replaced by Josh Johnson, who was elevated from the practice squad this week to backup White.

Sunday marked White’s first career start on Sunday, and was 26 of 32 for 259 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions after that play.
He had never taken an NFL snap prior to replacing an injured Zach Wilson last Sunday against New England.

Johnson, who was signed by the Jets this summer as a veteran presence in an inexperienced quarterback room, entered for his first game action since 2018, when he was with Washington. Johnson ran five plays and completed one of three passes for eight yards, and led the Jets to a field goal that tied the game at 17-17.

With Wilson out for a few weeks, the Jets traded for Joe Flacco earlier in the week, but Flacco was not active for Sunday’s game.
