Joe Benigno will see his 70th birthday next year, and has been a Jets fan almost since the New York Titans days – and he’s never seen Gang Green complete a comeback like the one they pulled off on Sunday.
“In 57 years I’m rooting for the team – 1965, Joe Namath’s rookie year, I started rooting for them – and I’ve seen them lose a lot of games, but I’ve never, ever, seen them win a game like that,” Joe told Tiki & Tierney in his weekly segment on Monday.
Unfortunately, Joe had to bring – you guessed it, OH THE PAIN – by likening that win to a week New York sports fans would rather forget.
“When you’ve been so bad for so long…it’s like when the Red Sox finally broke through and won a championship,” Joe said. “They had to do the unthinkable and come back from a 3-0 deficit against the hated Yankees in the playoffs to go on and win the championship. They had to do something no one else had ever done.”
Benigno didn’t want to compare the two situations outright, given that it’s only Week 2, but it has given him more hope for the future.
“It tells me maybe the football Gods are finally smiling,” he said, “and this is the kind of game that maybe, just maybe, you look at it and say it changes the karma of the franchise. You never know.”
What he does know, though, is who his next Jets jersey will be: "Garrett Wilson, bro, that's my guy."
