It took a few days of waiting, but Joe Benigno was still “giddy” on Saturday morning when he finally was able to get on air and give his reactions to the Aaron Rodgers trade finally happening.
Joe was elated to hear Rodgers dismiss the idea of ever unretiring Joe Namath’s No. 12, to call the Super Bowl III trophy “lonely,” and sound as if he were committed to two seasons in New York. But with all of the excitement comes expectations, and Joe was ready to clearly lay those out on Saturday.
“A division title, and a home playoff game, at minimum,” Joe said for Rodgers’ first season with Gang Green. “The Jets have played seven home playoff games since they came into the AFL as the Titans in 1960. They haven’t had one since the 2002 season.
“I want a division title. The Jets have won two division titles since the merger. Two! That’s it. That’s unbelievable. A record of 13-4. How’s that? Let’s go!”
Now, if Rodgers does indeed return for a second season, the expectations will rise considerably for Joe.
“If he is still here by year two, we have to win the Super Bowl,” Joe said. “That’s it. Year one, I’ll settle, and I probably won’t be happy if they lost the playoff game. But to me, minimum, win a division title, and host a playoff game.”
