Mike LaFleur: Zach Wilson needs to make this key mechanical tweak to improve

Zach Wilson, barring another injury to Mike White, will likely spend the rest of the season on the bench, or even inactive, after struggling badly once again in his stint as the Jets starting quarterback.

Still, the team has continued to voice its confidence in the No. 2 overall, pick, and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur believes he knows what Wilson needs to do in order to get back to the player he was in college.

“He’s a talented football player and a talented thrower…there’s things physically in the lower half that we have to get corrected,” LaFleur said.

“We can start that today, last week, a month ago, last April in OTAs, but it’s gonna be all-encompassing. It’s gonna be the work he puts in today, but going through that whole offseason, just resetting that lower half, getting his feet in the ground, getting balanced, and seeing where he can improve there.”

While LaFleur says to have diagnosed a potential mechanical issue with Wilson, there is clearly still more to be addressed in order for Wilson to be a competent NFL quarterback. There have been multiple issues with decision making this season, including interceptions along the sideline on passes that clearly looked to be intended as a throwaway, and the team seemed to take some issue with his lack of accountability at the podium earlier in the year, which led to his initial benching.

But the team seems to think they know what to focus on mechanically in the offseason, if they indeed elect to keep trying with Wilson as their quarterback of the future.
