Sal: Jets don't need Derek Carr because they're not a QB away from competing

Sal Licata saw the response from Jets fans when it was announced that the Raiders were benching Derek Carr for the rest of the season.

Many Gang Green supporters immediately envisioned Carr leading New York’s offense in 2023, to which Sal had one response: why in the world would Jets fans want that?

“Many layers here to this whole thing. No. 1, Derek Carr sucks!” Sal said during Thursday’s show, filling in with Jerry Recco for Boomer and Gio. “He is not the answer! No. 2, why are people treating the Jets like they’re a great team outside of the quarterback spot?

“Do you think if you put Derek Carr on this Jets team, they’re that much better than what they are right now?”

Sure, Carr would be an improvement over the production Zach Wilson provided this season, but Sal says the Jets are not a team that is one quarterback away from reaching their ultimate goal.

“I’m not saying Derek Carr or anyone else you want to talk about wouldn’t be an improvement over what the Jets have gotten this year,” Sal said. “But it’s not the final piece to a team that’s all of a sudden, ‘Go out and compete for a Super Bowl!’ This team is not close to that!”

For the record, Jerry made it clear that he strongly disagreed, and that the Jets absolutely could contend if they had more stable quarterback play.

“The idea that they’re not close to being good is wrong,” Jerry said. “They were 7-4 at one point. That doesn’t just happen…they beat the Bills.”
