Tiki: Jets have failed Zach Wilson, 'put him in a bad situation'

Zach Wilson is at the forefront of many Jets fans’ grievances on this Festivus day, but Tiki Barber isn’t point the finger at the struggling quarterback.

Tiki believes the former No. 2 overall pick’s struggles start from the top.

“I stopped being upset that Zach stinks and felt sorry for him,” Tiki said to open Friday’s show. “It made me rewind my mind and see where this went wrong. It went wrong because the New York Jets have failed Zach Wilson, and they brought the wrong quarterback to the New York Jets. They put him in a bad situation.

“Trevor Lawrence, he stunk last year. But then you see him this year with Doug Pederson and you see the ball coming out quickly, you see the play designs. ‘OK Evan Engram, turn around, get a hook, ball is out of Trevor Lawrence’s hands.’ The coaching is so apparent when you watch Trevor Lawrence’s ascension. We also saw this with Josh Allen…we saw it with Tua this season with Mike McDaniel, who turned this supposed bust into a pretty good quarterback.”

Tiki is not seeing the same opportunities given to Wilson, and he puts that on the coaching staff of the Jets. Had Wilson been drafted under a different regime with a different franchise, he believes the results could have looked a lot different than the mess Wilson currently finds himself in with New York.

“I think about the circumstances that Zach Wilson finds himself in, relative to these other young-ish quarterbacks who have started to thrive,” Tiki said. “Zach is in a position to fail because his coaching has let him down.

“It matters where you go. Where you get drafted matters…Zach Wilson is not being coached well.”
