The Jets are now in need of an offensive coordinator after mutually parting ways with Mike LaFleur after two seasons.
So, with the quarterback position in disarray and many other areas of the team ready to compete, the next hire is going to be a critical one.
Who should Gang Green covet?
Gio has an idea of who not to go after this offseason.
“Nathaniel Hackett with his Broncos disaster is a name that’s out there,” Gio said. “By the way, I’m not bringing him in. This guy that they hire has to be two-fold. It can’t just be an offensive coordinator who gets the best out of Zach, it has to be a guy who knows what the eff they are doing. The Jets don’t have enough of those guys on this coaching staff, and it has played out that way right in front of our eyes.
“If you bring in somebody like Frank Reich, you have to give him the title of assistant head coach. He’s not gonna come here to be Mike LaFleur’s replacement. Are you kidding me? He’s gotta come here and have major influence in that building, which puts pressure on Robert Saleh, and that could go one way or another.”
As for Boomer, he doesn’t see why the Jets can’t keep their offensive scheme the same (though Robert Saleh told reporters on Thursday that he’d be open to a new approach from their next hire), but the next offensive coordinator just needs to be a bit more experienced and a bit more sound in quarterback development.
“You’re putting people together who may not know each other, haven’t worked together…there could be someone else in that Kyle Shanahan tree that could be a different voice, a different way of seeing things,” Boomer said. “But they keep the same offense and the same vocabulary, but maybe someone who is just a little bit older and a little bit better in terms of understanding how to get the most out of Zach and the most out of the offense, and getting Zach prepared on a game-by-game basis. I don’t really know who that person is, whether that be Gary Kubiak or Klint Kubiak or whoever.”
