Kelly Stafford talks about her podcast, meeting Leonardo DiCaprio with Carton & Roberts

Craig Carton has known Matthew Stafford for a long time, so he knows he can call him “Matty,” a nickname his wife, Kelly Stafford, approved of when she joined Carton & Roberts for WAG Wednesday.

“Matty may be his alter ego when he has too much to drink, so we can roll with that,” she laughed.

Kelly Stafford discussed the Rams’ Super Bowl run, of course, but the big topic of her segment with Carton & Roberts was to dish on her new podcast, “The Morning After,” and why she’s so open on the pod and social media.

“With the podcast, I was able to open up because it was a safe place, there’s no comments under what I say, but I have no regrets about who I am on social media,” Kelly told Craig & Evan. “After Matthew has a bad game I’m less likely to click on the comments, but my four girls keep me busy, and while there’s a ton of negatives, there’s also a ton of positives, so I enjoy social media.”

One of the positives: when Kelly announced that she had been diagnosed with a brain tumor a few years ago, she received not only an outpouring of support, but also became a sounding board for people who were going through a similar fight themselves or with a loved one.

“That’s the reason I stay on and am more open; I still receive those DM’s, and I felt I could lend a hand and be a guiding light,” she said. “That’s why I’m open about my struggles, so maybe people don’t feel so alone. I feel like in this world, people can be so cruel and not real, especially on social media, so I try to bring some authenticity.”

Kelly has been open about many of her struggles, including her brain tumor – “I have a scan coming up but pretty sure I’m totally fine,” she beamed on the show – as well as postpartum depression, and even some body image issues that led Craig into asking about one of her juiciest stories: a botched breast enhancement back when she was a cheerleader at the University of Georgia.

“I actually got them done when I was 18 or 19, they were just terrible. I paid for them myself, and I got like a student discount – it was a disaster, I heard all the things you don’t want to hear when you’re going in for a surgery and I got what I paid for!” she said. “Later, we just got them reduced, and after I had my last child, the doctor was like, ‘this might need reconstruction, I don’t know what they did to you!’”

One thing that didn’t help, although it’s a fun story: having to look at supermodel Nina Agdal in a bikini, something both Kelly Stafford and Sarah Ryan, wife of new Colts quarterback Matt, had to ‘suffer through’ on a memorable trip to the Bahamas when Agdal was dating one Leonardo DiCaprio.

“We were sitting at a table for eight and joking we were the loser table, but Matthew is kicking me under the table like, ‘you’ll never guess who just walked in,’” Kelly recalled. “They sat down and I was nervous the whole time, but we had a good time, and they were like, ‘hey, we’ll meet you for sand volleyball tomorrow.’”

The Ryans and Staffords never believed that would happen, so Matty Ice and Matty Staffs went golfing the next day…only for their wives to find Leo and Nina warming up on the beach. Volleyball ensued, and both Leo and Nina proved how competitive they are.

“Nina took a good one to the face from one of the guys who worked there, but she manned up like no other,” Kelly said. “I know that’s her moneymaker, but we won, and Leo is like, ‘let’s go play Ultimate Frisbee!’ I’m thinking I keep have to keep looking at this girl in a bikini, which is not fair, but we beat them in ultimate Frisbee, and later on, we ended up playing drinking games.”

And that, she said, is where Sarah Ryan got an experience that would make women all over the world – and apparently, even Matthew Stafford – hella jealous.

“We were playing a game called Picolo, it’s basically a game where you have to do a dare or drink, and as you go on, the dares get dirtier,” Kelly recalled. “I got to read a dare for Leo that I thought he wouldn’t do, but he did it with a passion!”

That dare: drink seven times, or lick Sarah Ryan’s ear.

“It felt like slow motion. I think even Matt was jelaous!” Kelly laughed.

Just another day in the islands with Leo, and just another WAG Wednesday with Carton & Roberts…and as we found out, all because way back at UGA, Matthew just wanted to have fun and Kelly wasn’t that type of girl…but he eventually came around once she dated his backup.

“First, it wasn’t Joe Cox – he married one of my best friends who was also a cheerleader,” Kelly said at the outset. “But, Matthew and I had a little fun in college; obviously relationships are tough there, and he didn’t want one at all, he wanted to just have fun, and I’m not that type of person.”

Kelly loved him, but knew she had to move on, so she started courting a different QB who was the complete opposite…and it made Matty jealous.

“Almost immediately it affected him. It wasn’t a plot to begin with, but when I realized how it was working out a little bit, I didn’t like stop the relationship just because I knew it had a little effect on Matthew!” Kelly said. “I know it sounds terrible, but he wasn’t all sweethearts and rainbows either.”

Maybe not, but with a marriage, four kids, and now a Super Bowl ring, life for the Staffords is pretty, pretty, pretty good – but they’re still the same people they always have been, and that’s something Kelly tries to bring forward on her podcast and her social media.

“People look at our lives and think it’s this wonderful situation, but we have troubles just like everyone else,” she said. “Maybe the one thing we don’t have trouble with is financial, which I understand isn’t everyone, but I stay authentic, because I enjoy the thought of even one person saying we helped them battle something.”
