MetLife Stadium is working on replacing its controversial turf with a new synthetic surface to be installed for next season, as reported by Jordan Raanan of ESPN.
The current turf has been a target of heavy criticism in recent years due to multiple injuries suffered on the field that players have attributed to the field. Sterling Shepard tore his ACL during a home game this season, and back in 2020, multiple 49ers players suffered season-ending injuries that they pointed to the turf as a catalyst behind them.
While players and the NFLPA have advocated for grass to be put in, Raanan reports that it won’t be grass, but a different turf surface, which the NFLPA told ESPN was “a good step,” but “could not come soon enough.”
In a statement to ESPN, MetLife Stadium said, “We have made the decision to replace the field in 2023 and are currently reviewing proposals from multiple vendors for a new synthetic surface.”
