Boomer & Gio: Could Mets actually trade Max Scherzer at deadline?

According to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, Max Scherzer wants to see things through with the Mets, but if the season is still off the rails by the trade deadline, he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause.

Which leads Boomer and Gio to a question that previously seemed unfathomable: could the all-in Mets and their historic payroll actually become a team that ships out their $43 million ace at this time next month?

Boomer believes it would only happen if the Mets ate a large chunk of Scherzer’s record salary.

“How much is Steve Cohen going to be willing to absorb?” Boomer said. “If you trade Max, then you would retain some of his salary and hopefully getting some reasonable prospects back in return. I think that’s what they tried to do with Eduardo Escobar.”

Escobar wasn’t seen as anything near the type of contributor Scherzer is in regards to the 2023 Mets, but New York did eat 50 percent of his deal to get two minor league pitchers back from the Angels in return.

As for Gio, if the Mets don’t improve over the next month, it might be the best course of action to ship out Scherzer, and maybe even Justin Verlander.

“Both of those guys are under contract for next year,” Gio said. “If things keep getting worse, what is the plan? Is it to bring those guys back and squeeze out another ounce of juice potentially, or do you just cut bait, start over, and go with a different approach?”
