Justin Verlander is starting the season on the IL, likely to miss multiple starts instead of making his Mets debut this weekend.

Evan’s reaction was one of frustration, but also one of “I told you so.”

Pointing back to February, when many Mets fans laughed at the news that Jacob deGrom’s first bullpen session with the Rangers was being pushed back, Evan warned that New York has a few aging arms atop their rotation, and injuries may hit New York’s rotation and cause Mets fans to eat their words.

“It was about Jacob deGrom missing a freaking bullpen session in February, and I said ‘Shut your mouths,’” Evan said.

“I’ll just say, deGrom is not pitching well, but he’s pitching, and Justin Verlander is gonna start the year on the IL,” Evan said. “And we don’t know, despite his optimism, when he’s gonna pitch next. So the reason I told Mets fans to shut up in February, was because you knew something like this could happen when you rely on older starting pitchers.”

DeGrom indeed had a disastrous Texas debut (though the Rangers bats exploded for a nine-run inning against the Phillies to bail out their new ace), but he was on the mound, which is more than Verlander, the ace the Mets signed to replace deGrom, could say.

“When I heard that news,” Evan said. “In conjunction with the fact that deGrom is pitching today, it pissed me off.”
