As the Mets get set to host the lowly Cardinals for three games at Citi Field, Evan says the series has to end in a sweep for New York.
Why such a must-win scenario in mid-June? Because it’s getting late early out there.
“The Mets are very close to burying themselves,” Evan said. “If you don’t turn it around four games can turn into seven games.
“You can’t just hover at four, five, six, or seven games out. You can’t be under .500 and say, ‘Well, it’s early.’ Eventually, you have to make those games up.”
Evan says the division is out of reach, and even a Wild Card spot is becoming tricky given how many teams are ahead of the Mets in the standings. So, New York has to start gaining ground now, and it starts with three games against the team with the worst record in the National League.
“These are damn important games, because they have to survive,” Evan said. “Otherwise, we’re headed toward a place I never thought was imaginable with this roster and this ownership and this manager, and that’s being buried.
“They’re in a danger zone. They gotta start winning some games.”
