Evan Roberts clamored for the Mets to bring back Jacob deGrom, and was not happy at all when they elected to go after Justin Verlander and allow their ace to sign with the Rangers.

Now, amid news that deGrom is set to undergo a second Tommy John surgery that he likely won’t return from until he is 36 years old, Evan is ready to say he was wrong.

“I feel horrible for my guy Jacob deGrom,” Evan said. “But the Mets made the right decision, as painful as it was…they made a decision that I didn’t agree with. A lot of it was emotional, I stand by that.”

But that doesn’t mean any Mets fans should be taking this opportunity to go on a victory lap for the oft-injured ace who was unquestionably the best in baseball, and one of the best ever, when healthy for the Mets.

“If you have any ill will towards deGrom, I think you’re a fool,” Evan said. “I don’t understand why. He was offered a lot more and he left, and he did us a favor because he’s not here. But it’s horrible news. I feel terrible for him. But the Mets made the right choice.

“If you’re a real Met fan…why you should take any pleasure or joy in a legendary Met, who I do think is gonna have his number retired someday, having career-altering surgery, why anybody would get joy from that is beyond me.”

Craig’s response to the news was decidedly less emotional.

“Oh well. Why would I feel bad for him? He’s getting paid,” Craig said. “He’s a turncoat. He turned his back on New York.”
