Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander are together again, the former Tigers teammates now arriving at the Mets spring training camp together with pitchers and catchers officially reporting on Wednesday.
Many see the team’s two aces and future Hall of Famers, but Gio sees a potential concern.
“I see a couple old guys,” Gio said. “I’m concerned about that. They look fine, but I know they’re a couple old guys.”
Gio, still scarred by how Scherzer’s season ended last year, with two clunkers in the Wild Card Series and in a pivotal series with the Braves to determine the division, which was just a year after Scherzer’s dead arm spoiled his playoffs with the Dodgers in 2021. Meanwhile, Verlander is less than a week away from turning 40 years old, and Gio is worried about the star duo’s availability come October.
So, he isn’t putting much stock in their regular season workloads. As long as the Mets do enough to get to the playoffs, and their arms are fresh for October, then it’s a win.
“I don’t care about the starts in the regular season,” Gio said. “I care about the Mets being good enough to get into the playoffs, and these guys pitching their best when it matters, which hasn’t been the case for either of them in recent memory, which concerns me.”
