For the large group of Mets fans who are crushed by the news of Jacob deGrom leaving for the Rangers, Joe Benigno wants you to know that it is a loss that the Mets won’t have too much trouble replacing.

After all, the team won 101-games with deGrom having very little impact on the season due to injury.

“How much did he really impact the Mets’ 101-win season?” Joe said. “Not much…Let’s be honest.”

Joe is also convinced that deGrom simply didn’t want to pitch in New York anymore, and that doesn’t leave much else to say, except goodbye to an era that didn’t see much team success despite deGrom being so good when healthy.

“Sure you’re upset, you’re disappointed, but you can’t be surprised that deGrom went somewhere else,” Joe said. “I don’t think the Mets were ever going to give him those years and that money, but he didn’t even go back to Cohen to see if the Mets would match the deal. He didn’t want to be here.

“As great as he was, it didn’t always lead to the Mets winning, either.”

DeGrom was an All-Star in 2021, but hasn’t pitched a full season since 2019, when he won his second straight Cy Young award. Joe is convinced the Rangers will never get that level of performance from deGrom during his five-year deal.

“I don’t think he’s the same guy anymore,” Joe said. “I don’t think you’re ever seeing he guy who won Cy Young awards in 2018 and 2019. I don’t think you’re every seeing that Jacob deGrom anymore.”
