Justin Verlander was tagged for five runs on seven hits in Thursday’s loss to the Braves, just 24 hours after Max Scherzer faded fast following a strong start to his night on Wednesday.

Now, two and a half months into the season, Keith McPherson is ready to say that the Mets’ two $40 million aging aces are done.

“I think Verlander and Scherzer are just cooked,” Keith said. “They’re at the end of their careers. They’re old guys and have a lot of miles out of them.

“You paid them a lot of money hoping to squeeze the last little bit out of them, and it’s just not there.”

The Mets committed nearly $90 million to the two future Hall of Famers, who are a combined 78 years of age. Keith would have went a different way in the offseason when it came to constructing the roster, but now, the Mets have put their commitment into two pitchers that just don’t seem to have it anymore.

“They made mistakes,” Keith said. “Chris Bassitt should still be on this team. It’s pitching. They have enough guys that can hit, and they have young guys that can hit. It’s the pitching.”
