Jacob deGrom turned in another dominant start for the Mets since his return from an extended IL stint, and each start brings him closer to a potential opt out of his current contract.
If and when that time comes, Boomer and Gio say the Mets will have to ask themselves a difficult question.
“Can this greatness be good for the next five years?” Boomer asked.
Gio says the asking price by deGrom will likely be massive despite recent injury concerns, giving his stature among the rest of the league when healthy, and the payday his rotation mate received this past offseason in Max Scherzer.
“Five years, $40 million is what he’s probably gonna be looking for,” Gio said. “He’s got a guy in his own dugout…that’s making that a year.”
For deGrom to earn that type of payday, Boomer says he has to be his typical dominant self for the Mets the rest of the way, and through a deep October run.
“It’s gonna have to come down to what Scherzer has done the last three or four years of his career,” Boomer said. “Winning a World Series, not losing a game for the Dodgers, that kind of stuff. He’s got to have that kind of run now to be able to warrant some sort of long-term contract extension.”
Whatever the asking price, Mets ownership will be able to meet it, and should do whatever they can to make sure the top pitcher on the planet remains in New York.
“Steve Cohen’s got the money,” Boomer said. “He’s our guy…I hope that guy never leaves here. I hope he ends up a Mets legend.”
