Max Scherzer open to waiving no-trade clause if Mets can't turn it around: Report

The Mets could turn into one of the most intriguing teams at the trade deadline this year, as their record-high payroll may not be enough to keep them in the playoff race by the end of July.

So, if their underperforming team doesn’t turn things around in the next month, could they ship out some of their high-priced stars and wave the white flag?

According to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, if it comes to that, Max Scherzer would be open to waiving his no-trade clause.

Per DiComo, Scherzer would prefer to make it work for the Mets, but if they are at a point where selling is the best option, he would waive his no-trade clause for “the right situation,” meaning a team that has a real shot of winning a World Series in 2023.

The Mets would likely have to eat some of Scherzer’s contract, but he has been pitching better of late, and if that continues and the Mets don’t go on a run, he could waive his no-trade clause and go to a contender, much like he did in 2021 when he waived his clause to be dealt to the Dodgers.
