A long-lasting tradition in minor league baseball includes a luxurious dinner on the tab of a major leaguer who may be in town for a rehab appearance.

That was Max Scherzer on Wednesday night in Hartford, after tossing 80 pitches for Double-A Binghamton in what will be his final tune-up before returning to the Mets.

So, Scherzer honored that tradition after Wednesday’s game, and made it clear to reporters that the Rumble Ponies were going to be splurging on his tab that night.

“Oh yeah,” Scherzer said with a smile when asked if he would be taking care of a dinner for the team. “They’re eating well tonight.”

According to one Twitter commenter, the dinner took place at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar in West Hartford, about five miles from Dunkin’ Donuts Park, where Scherzer and the Rumble Ponies had just beaten the Yard Goats. The Mets minor leaguers would have been treated to $60 dollar New York strips or $100 tomahawk steaks, a fine dining experience Scherzer was likely happy to provide as a former MLBPA leader and the recent signee of a record contract with the Mets.

One Rumble Ponies pitcher confirmed via Twitter that the dinner was a good one, and Scherzer lived up to his word after telling reporters that the team would be taken care of.

“Can confirm,” 25-year-old righty Josh Hejka tweeted. “Ate well.”
