Congratulations to Pete Alonso, who is the new Mets single-season RBI leader!
Alonso entered Sunday’s game in Oakland with 123 RBI, one behind the franchise record of 124 shared by Mike Piazza (1999) and David Wright (2008) – and with the Mets already leading 5-0 in the third, the Polar Bear launched this two-run bomb that put him all alone atop the leaderboard at 125:
It was also Alonso’s 39th homer, which officially gives him two of the Top 5 home run seasons in franchise history; his 53 in 2019 is the record, and he is now also tied for fifth with Darryl Strawberry’s two 39-dinger seasons (1987 and 1988) for fifth.
The Polar Bear is one of only four Mets to record even 120 RBI in a season, which he has done twice; his 120 in 2019 is tied with Robin Ventura’s 120 in 1999 for fourth place all-time.
The Mets had already set a team record for hit by pitches this year, and Mark Canha’s 25 (and possibly counting) set a new individual single-season record, so congrats to the Mets for a new record that is much less painful.
