Russ in Norwalk, Connecticut still thinks Sal Licata is at fault for the Mets’ NL East collapse last season, and Sal went scorched earth at the idea that he had anything to do with how the once promising season came to such a disappointing conclusion.

“Are you that stupid?” Sal said. “And what you think they lost because of something I said? You think they lost because of something I said? You idiot!

“You blame me, you idiot. I had nothing to do with it. I didn't take the mound. I didn't throw the ball. I didn't strike out. You're blaming me? Blame the players!”

Russ didn’t care for Sal’s response, but Sal had heard enough. Sure, he declared the NL East race over at the end of May after New York built a 10.5 game lead with a win over the Nationals, but he was done taking any blame, especially from Russ.

“I don't care who you are,” Sal said. “If you think that any words that I said caused the Mets to lose the division, you're an absolute idiot. I'll tell it to your face. I mean there is idiocy, and then there's that guy.”
