Max Scherzer was bit by the long ball once again on Sunday, serving up two home runs after allowing three in his last outing against the Diamondbacks.
The future Hall of Famer’s five earned runs on Sunday against the Padres brought his season ERA to 4.31, which would be his worst mark since 2011 with the Tigers, when he was just 26 years old.
Tiki doesn’t see things improving for the aging Scherzer, who is starting to look like a sunk cost for the Mets, and serving as a microcosm of the team’s big contracts that aren’t panning out.
“It’s gotten to the point where you can’t trust him anymore in big spots,” Tiki said. “He’s making $1.6 million a start, and he gives up a home run every time.
“This is a gross misspending of $345 million. There’s no other way to look at it…I don’t have faith that the Mets’ spending is going to correct itself on the field.”
BT had a much more blunt assessment of Scherzer’s season so far.
“He’s stealing money,” BT said.
