For Gregg Giannotti, Tuesday is the final day of his unabashed Celtics fandom…because he got it ALL out in the open of Tuesday’s Boomer & Gio Show by just destroying the Brooklyn Nets fresh off them getting swept by the C’s.
“We gotta soak up every bit of this, because it does not get any better…a sweep!” Gio crowed. “You put this team together, the whole Nets fanbase gets cocky…you guys suck! This is the biggest embarrassment in the history of New York sports! You should go back to New Jersey!”
Gio is, of course, actually a Knicks fan, and made no secret that his favorite franchise has been one of the most dysfunctional in all of sports over the last 20 years. But, that wasn’t stopping him from enjoying the “unmitigated disaster” that was the Nets’ playoff run, and season as a whole.
“This is everything you can’t stand about pro sports and settling in one place and watching it fail, and it’s so satisfying,” Gio said. “I have respect for Kevin Durant, but after this series, my goodness – this is a guy who basically needs two superstars playing at the highest level with him to make the NBA Finals. And Kyrie, basically not showing up after Game 1 and smiling after the game saying how he and Kevin are gonna manage this team…WHAT? What have you done to deserve that? Everything you can’t stand about today’s NBA Superstar has manifested itself at Barclays Center, and watching them flame out like this is the greatest thing ever.”
And to be honest, Boomer had to agree with him.
“You absolutely should go off on the Nets,” The Booms said. “It’s a soulless team, one of their superstars played only 29 games this year and their coach has the audacity to say they ran out of gas? This is a colossal failure on so many levels, and it’s been going on for three years. The amount of money this franchise has spent in the upper echelon of talent, not to mention the disaster that was James Harden, it is a monumental failure unlike any other we have ever seen given the amount of BS that has gone on.”
Poor Jerry Recco had to pick up the torch for the Nets, saying he was excited for next season, but both Boomer & Gio had to wonder exactly what kind of shape the squad will be in come October.
“They’re going to give Kyrie an extension? For what?” Boomer asked, to which Gio replied: “Because they’re tied to Kevin Durant, and Durant wants him there!”
The boys then both gave some actual dap to the Celtics and head coach (and former Nets assistant) Ime Udoka, before Gio went off one last time.
“This was supposed to be the best seven seed in the history of the world and the Celtics caught a bad break – my ass! You got swept!” he screamed. “I couldn’t even draw up a better situation. Losing in the play-in round wouldn’t have been this satisfying! Something about the Celtics steamrolling them was the perfect end to this story…and I don’t know if it’s going to get better!”
It was an open you just have to hear for yourself, to hear the passion of Gio – fresh off little sleep because he was too excited to rip the Nets – and the resignation of Boomer that basketball in New York has sunsetted in April.
