As if basketball fans were not already still steaming from Wednesday night’s controversial ending between the Heat and Bucks, the NBA delivered another WTF moment Thursday morning.
The Brooklyn Nets announced that Hall of Fame point guard Steve Nash signed a four-year contract to become head coach of the team.
Just how out of left field was this move? Oddsmakers taking bets on who the next coach would be did not even list Nash as a possibility.
Nash, 46, retired after the 2013-14 season and in 2015 was hired by the Golden State Warriors as a part-time consultant. When Kevin Durant joined the Warriors the two developed a relationship as many believe that was a contributing factor in the Nets’ decision to hire the former two-time MVP.
Nash, of course, does not have any coaching experience, so there are some concerns about his hire as well.
The reaction from media and fans on social media was a mixture of shock, cynicism and excitement.
