According to Brian Lewis of the New York Post, “all indications strongly point toward” Irving coming back to Brooklyn for next season, and that a contract extension is likely.
Irving has another three weeks to decide whether he will opt out of the final year and $36.5 million of his contract and become a free agent, but he has indicated that he would return to Brooklyn, close to his New Jersey roots, and back with his close friend Kevin Durant.
But offseason reports and comments from general manager Sean Marks suggested that the franchise may not be as committed to Irving as in the past, before he missed a large chunk of last season due to his refusal to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Without Irving in a full-time role, the trendy title favorite Nets suddenly became a play-in team.
But Irving still has star power, and the Nets seem to be trending towards bringing him back for the future and trying again with their star duo of him and Durant.
