Aaron Boone was ejected from Wednesday’s series finale against the Guardians after going ballistic on the umpiring crew, coming out three different times to voice his avid frustration after reviewing a play despite Cleveland not challenging the call within the allotted time.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the first, Josh Naylor blooped a ball into center, and Aaron Hicks charged, slid, and trapped the ball before firing it back into the infield. The runner was doubled off second base, ending the inning.

Or so the Yankees thought.

After the broadcast returned from commercial break, it seemed as if Cleveland had been awarded a challenge, though far longer than the allowed 15 seconds had passed. Turns out, the umpiring crew reviewed the call on their own, reversed the call, and the Guardians wound up taking a 2-0 lead.

MLB’s new pace of play rules include managers having 15 seconds to challenge a call. That didn’t happen from Guardians manager Terry Francona, and a fuming Boone was tossed after giving it to the umpiring crew after the call was reversed.
