Joe Benigno thinks the Yankees should retire A-Rod's number - and Jerry just can't do it

An interesting Yankees take, of all things, from Joe Benigno Wednesday as he and Jerry Recco held it down for Boomer & Gio: the Yankees should retire No. 13 for A-Rod?

A caller named Jake told Joe he agreed with all of the Hall of Fame thoughts he had earlier in the show, but just couldn’t stomach the Yankees retiring Alex Rodriguez’s number because of the off-field shenanigans, which outweigh the positives on the field.

“I agree – it’s not the player, it’s the whole picture, because I loved A-Rod,” Jerry said. “I loved him, but I just wouldn’t go that far. Him being suspended, and suing the organization…yes, they won the World Series and he won some MVPs, but there’s more to it than that.”

"He did win two MVPs and the World Series, and how long was he there, 12 years?" Joe asked. "He was terrific for a long time.

Another caller thought 2009 was enough, and that led to a rant from Joe about ‘the politics’ of the Hall of Fame and retired numbers, and, well, then it became about how Jerry thinks A-Rod is a Hall of Famer but not a Yankees retired number because he spent almost a decade elsewhere, too.

"He's a current free agent type of player - he, to me, is the epitome of having all three logos on his hat if he goes in," Jerry said.

"To me, he's a Yankee," Joe replied. "And, to me, even though Reggie identifies as a Yankee, he won three championships in Oakland, too, so that's different."

You just have to hear Jerry, Joe, and the callers argue about it all - take a listen above!
