It got off to a rocky start, but Luis Severino’s first rehab with the Double-A Somerset Patriots is in the books: 45 pitches over four innings, with two runs allowed on four hits and four strikeouts.
Severino was moved up after making one two-inning rehab outing at Class-A Tampa, and his first experience with Somerset got off to a rough opening. Staked to a 3-0 lead (the Patriots are visitors in Hartford), Sevy allowed a one-out single and then a two-run home run to cut the lead to 3-2.
He then allowed a pair of two-out singles, but Sevy struck out Zac Veen to escape the jam, and went nine up, nine down over his final three innings, retiring the last 10 he faced in a row overall.
Severino threw 35 of his 45 pitches for strikes, and he hit 99 MPH on the gun on two of his strikeout pitches.
Severino is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list next Monday, Sept. 12, but as that is an off day for both the MLB Yankees and throughout the Minors, the team has a decision to make: have Sevy make at least one more rehab outing next Tuesday and then not return until Sept. 18 at the earliest (which would give him probably three MLB starts) or activate him and continue to build him up on a pitch count.
The latter is an option given the expanded rosters, as the Yankees could use someone (perhaps Clarke Schmidt) as a piggyback for Severino, who has thrown 22 pitches over two innings and now 45 over four in his two rehab outings.
