(670 The Score) The Cubs continued in the early stages of another sell-off Monday.
Chicago has agreed to a deal that will send rookie righty reliever Scott Effross to the New York Yankees in exchange for Triple-A right-hander Hayden Wesneski.
Effross, 28, has a 2.66 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 47 appearances this season. He has a 2.91 ERA in parts of two MLB seasons, and he’ll now join a Yankees team that sits comfortably in first place in the AL East and which has World Series expectations. Effross also carries 10.2 strikeout-per-nine-innings rate.
Wesneski, 24, was ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Yankees’ organization, according to MLB Pipeline. He has a 3.81 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 19 starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. The Yankees selected Wesneski in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB Draft. Wesneski has a mix of pitches that includes a four-seam fastball, sinker, cutter and slider.
Effross’ exit from the Cubs was a surprise, given that he has performed well and has five more years of team control left on his contract. The Cubs selected him in the 15th round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
