All signs point to Brian Cashman returning as Yankees GM on a new contract, but Craig Carton posed the question when Cashman joined the show on Friday afternoon: if another GM job was available, would he ever consider leaving?
“I’d be forced to if I didn’t have an opportunity to stay,” Cashman said. “I think the easy thing is to leave, because this is a tough market. I think some people see the winds blow, and say ‘You know what, I’m out, because I can potentially do this somewhere else and have a different lifestyle.’ But New York is different. It’s a different animal that only certain people can handle and deal with and fight through.
“George Steinbrenner taught me that when I was working my way up the ladder under his regime…this is a unique market, and It’s only made for people who are tough enough to handle it, and so far I’ve been able to handle it.”
Cashman is the longest-tenured GM in all of baseball, and to do that in the New York market while the first decade-plus of his tenure was spent under the watch of George Steinbrenner is an achievement. But the expectations of running the day-to-day operations of the Yankees can be draining, though it doesn’t seem like Cashman would want it any other way.
“I’d rather do it here than take the easy way out,” Cashman said. “And at times that comes with good things, and at times it comes with some difficult stuff.”
