The crowd in the Bronx roared with delight when Jose Trevino emerged from the dugout as Kyle HIgashioka retreated from the on deck circle with the game on the line Friday night.
As his at-bat continued in the 13th inning, chants of “Jose” began reverberating from Yankee Stadium, and grew deafening moments later after Trevino’s single drove in the winning run for his second walk-off hit of the season.
That’s the treatment Trevino now receives from the home fans as the newest cult hero.
“This is the best crowd in baseball,” Trevino said after being the hero again on Friday night/Saturday morning. “It’s the best place to play. Nowhere better.”
Trevino was inactive for nearly four hours while the Yankee offense labored through 13 innings with just four hits, at least until Trevino came on to pinch hit and was the hero once again.
“You just stay ready,” Trevino said. “Whenever the team needs me.
“I just try to be prepared. Anything that happens, I just try to be prepared.”
