The Yankee lineup is in desperate need of a spark, but one of their best bats in Anthony Rizzo remains on the shelf, and will stay there through this crucial series with the second-place Rays.
Rizzo’s bad back drew some added concern when it was revealed that he saw a back specialist during the team’s west coast trip, but Aaron Boone said Friday that an epidural should keep the first baseman from needing an IL stint down the stretch, when the Yanks will need all the firepower they can get to avoid a monumental collapse.
“Really optimistic that this is going do the trick and be what helps him moving forward,” Boone said. “This is something that should give him a lot of relief the rest of the way this season.
“We feel like this is gonna work.”
Still, Rizzo will be out until at least Tuesday, as he isn’t expected to resume baseball activities until Monday. Boone was hopeful that he will be able to pencil Rizzo into the lineup on Tuesday against the Twins.
