After spending the last quarter-century as one of Brian Cashman’s contemporaries, Brian Sabean is now one of his advisors.

The Yankees announced Tuesday that they have named former Giants GM Sabean, 66, an Executive Advisor to Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Cashman, re-joining the Yankees for the first time since 1992.
Sabean joined the Yankees as a scout in 1985, and was the Director of Scouting from 1986-90 and the Vice President of Player Development and Scouting from 1990-92 before leaving for San Francisco, where he started in 1993 as an assistant to the GM and VP of Scouting Player Personnel.
He moved up to the GM spot in 1996 and served in that role for two decades before moving up to Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations from 2015-18. In his 23 seasons at the helm, the Giants reached the postseason eight times, winning five NL West titles, four National League pennants and three World Series Championships.
Sabean spent the last four seasons as an Executive Vice President outside of baseball operations, working on strategic initiatives as a senior advisor and evaluator.
The 2023 season will be Sabean’s 45th in baseball, as he began his career in 1979 as an assistant coach at St. Leo College in Florida, then was an assistant (1980-82) and head coach (1983-84) at the University of Tampa – the alma mater of both Lou Piniella and Tino Martinez – before joining the Yankees.
