Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - In the days leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay, WGR will provide profiles on some players that could be a good fit for the Buffalo Bills at positions of need.
As we continue to focus on defensive ends, this profile will feature Nic Scourton, who saw honors come to him no matter where he played his college football.
A native of Bryan, Texas, Scourton began his college career in the Big 10 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
Scourton played in 14 games as a true freshman in 2022, and in his breakout 2023 season, Scourton led the Big 10 with 10 sacks and earned Second-Team All-Big 10 honors.
He then decided to return to his home state, transferring to Texas A&M.
Scourton started all 12 games for the Aggies last season, and led the team in sacks with five. He was third in the SEC with 14 tackles for loss.
His numbers were down from the previous season at Purdue, but that might be attributed to the fact that Scourton faced numerous double teams. Despite that, he was still named First-Team All-SEC.
Scourton, who will turn 21 in August, was also a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which goes to the top defensive player who exhibits integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.
The 6-foot-4 Scourton weighed in at 257 pounds at the NFL Combine, down nearly 30 pounds from his listed playing weight at Texas A&M last season. He did not participate in drills at the combine or the Aggies' pro day.
Here is what Joe Marino from the “Locked on Bills” and “Locked on NFL Scouting” podcasts has to say about Scourton:
Positives:
Scourton is an urgent and violent football player, and is a ton of fun to watch.
His motor is unrelenting. He's got a very dense build, and I think that helps him a ton. He's got good length, but that dense build really allows him to have outstanding contact balance, and for him to be firm at the point of attack and get to the edges of blocks and be able to power through.
I think he's got a ton of pass rush variety. His three-best moves are his chop, his rip and his spin, and he deploys them very creatively. He is one of those types of players that can really play through angles and reduce angles. That power component really shows up in the way he plays, but also what translates well to the Bills defense.
I think there's a play temperament that's just easy to love about Nick Scourton.
Concerns:
I think his first step is just OK. I would like to see him be a little bit more dynamic with his get off to maximize his overall profile as a player.
I do think he lacks flexibility in his lower half, so that creates some challenges when he's looking to corner and turn those steep angles.
He's a guy that's had a lot of variance with his playing weight. He started his career at Purdue listed at 280 pounds, but probably looked lighter. Texas A&M had him listed at 285, and then he shows up at the combine at 257. We have to find the right playing weight to maximize his physical potential.
WGR will provide full coverage of the 2025 NFL Draft during all seven rounds, starting Thursday, April 24 and continuing through Saturday, April 26.
