Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills have secured their MVP quarterback with a new contract that will link him to Western New York through the 2030 season.
The Bills reached an agreement on Sunday with quarterback Josh Allen on a record-setting six-year contract reportedly worth up to $330 million, with an NFL record $250 million of guaranteed money.
That figure would make Allen the second-highest paid quarterback in the league at $55 million, in terms of average annual value (AAV), only behind Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott at $60 million. Allen is also tied with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow with his average annual salary.
The 28-year-old had four years left on his original contract in Buffalo, but this is a completely new contract. Had Allen stuck with his previous contract, he would have accounted for $44 million against the salary cap in 2025.
The 2024 season for Allen was a memorable one, as he completed 63.6% of his pass attempts in the regular season for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns to just six interceptions. Allen also added 531 yards rushing on 102 carries and 12 touchdowns. His 41 total touchdowns put him fourth in the NFL among quarterbacks.
While most of Allen's 2024 stats were not among the top quarterbacks in the NFL, he did help the Bills finish the season with a 13-4 record, resulting in a fifth-straight AFC East title. This all came in a year in which many had thought the Bills will "retooling", and likely not to contend for another division title.
In his three playoff games in 2024, Allen completed 70.7% of his pass attempts for 636 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also accounted for 105 yards on 29 carries and two more touchdowns.
Allen was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week four different times this season, and became the first player in NFL history to record, at least, 25 passing touchdowns, 10 rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in a season.
He also became the fourth quarterback in league history to record, at least, 13 wins, 40 offensive touchdowns and fewer than 10 interceptions in a single season.
Those regular season stats resulted in Allen becoming the first Bills quarterback to be named the NFL's Most Valuable Player. Allen is also just the third player from Buffalo to win NFL MVP since the merger, joining running backs Thurman Thomas (1991) and O.J. Simpson (1973).
Over his seven years with the Bills since being drafted in the first-round (seventh overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft, Allen is already 11th in in franchise history in games played (111), third in passing yards (26,434) and second in passing touchdowns (195).
Allen's new contract with the Bills adds to an already active offseason for general manager Brandon Beane with securing certain players to long-term contracts.
The Bills have already signed defensive captain, linebacker Terrel Bernard, as well as defensive end Greg Rousseau, wide receiver Khalil Shakir and long snapper Reid Ferguson to four-year contract extensions.
