Bills trade twice, eventually move out of first round in 2024 NFL Draft

Buffalo will have the first selection in the second round to start Day 2 on Friday

Orchard Park, N.Y (WGR 550) - The 2024 NFL Draft officially got underway Thursday night in Detroit, but the Buffalo Bills elected to make a pair of moves that placed themselves on the outside of the first round picture.

Entering Thursday night, the Bills were originally slated to select 28th overall, and many had thought they were going to either stay put and take a wide receiver, or make a move up to go get an intended target.

However, just as the Bills were on the clock with the 28th pick, general manager Brandon Beane elected to move back in the draft order, moving back four places in a swap with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Bills ended up trading the 28th pick, along with a fourth-round pick (133rd overall) and a seventh-round pick (248th overall) to the Chiefs in exchange for the 32nd overall pick, a third-round pick (95th overall) that the Bills didn't have entering the weekend, and the 221st overall pick in Round 7.

The Chiefs went on to select speedy wide receiver Xavier Worthy with the 28th overall selection, providing quarterback Patrick Mahomes with another skilled weapon to get the football to on their offense.

Once again, as the Bills were just on the clock at Pick 32 to close out the first round, Beane pulled the trigger on another trade down the draft board, this time by just one slot.

This time, the Bills traded the 32nd overall pick and the 200th overall selection in the sixth round to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for the 33rd overall pick and the 141st overall selection in Round 5.

With the final trade down of the night, the Bills will actually be leading off Day 2 of the NFL Draft on Friday with the very first pick of the second round.

In addition, Buffalo will select with the 60th overall selection in Round 2, followed by the 95th overall pick in the third round.

NFL Draft coverage on WGR begins Friday night promptly at 7 p.m. ET with Nate Geary, Zach Jones and Derek Kramer, just before the Bills make their first pick of the draft.
